چکیده

—We examined aspects of the ecology of Notropis sabinae, the Sabine shiner, including habitat associations, population age structure, reproduction and diet in two east Texas streams from November 2001 through October 2002. Notropis sabinae exhibited no strong seasonal habitat associations, but generally were found in relatively shallow slow flowing runs and riffles. The population consisted of three age groups (ages 0, 1, 2) with age1 fish being the most abundant. Estimated maximum life span was 2.5 y. Reproductively mature individuals were observed from May through October. Temporal patterns in ovarian development, gonadosomatic index and ova development indicated that N. sabinae spawns multiple clutches of eggs over an extended spawning period. Stomach contents consisted primarily of aquatic insects, followed by other aquatic taxa (e.g., Collembola, Crustacea and Hydracarina) and terrestrial insects.

Habitat Associations, Life History, and Diet of the Blackspot Shiner, Notropis atrocaudalis

The ecology of Notropis atrocaudalis (Blackspot Shiner) including habitat associations, population age structure, reproduction, and food habits were examined in two east Texas streams from November 2001 through October 2002. Blackspot Shiner were generally found in relatively shallow, slowowing runs, but exhibited no strong seasonal habitat associations. The population consisted of four age gro...

Influence of water quality and associated contaminants on survival and growth of the endangered Cape Fear shiner (Notropis mekistocholas).

The Cape Fear shiner (Notropis mekistocholas) is a recently described cyprinid species endemic to the Cape Fear River Basin of North Carolina, USA. Only five populations of the fish remain; thus, it is listed as endangered by the U.S. Government. Determining habitat requirements of the Cape Fear shiner, including water quality and physical habitat, is critical to the survival and future restora...

Complex influences of low-head dams and artificial wetlands on fishes in a Colorado River tributary system

Low-head dams in arid regions restrict fish movement and create novel habitats that have complex effects on fish assemblages. The influence of low-head dams and artificial wetlands on fishes in Muddy Creek, a tributary of the Colorado River system in the USA was examined. Upstream, fish assemblages were dominated by native species including two species of conservation concern, bluehead sucker, ...

Population Density and Instream Habitat Suitability of the Endangered Cape Fear Shiner

—The Cape Fear shiner Notropis mekistocholas is an endangered minnow endemic to the Cape Fear River basin of North Carolina; only five populations remain, all of which are declining. Determining the population densities and habitat requirements of the species is critical to its survival and restoration planning. We conducted population surveys (four sites) and instream microhabitat suitability ...

Effects of Turbidity on Prey Consumption by Prairie Stream Fishes

—Reduced suspended-sediment loads (i.e., turbidity) in many Midwestern prairie rivers have been hypothesized as contributing to the replacement of species that historically occupied highly turbid main-channel habitats by visually feeding species that are competitively superior in less-turbid waters. We examined the relationship between prey consumption and turbidity for six fish species from th...
